The role of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment in Pain Management

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), has become increasingly popular within the treatment of orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries, inc symptomatic pain. PRP is a pro inflammatory treatment which is used in promoting a localised inflammatory response. For any tissue to heal and recover it needs the correct bioactive materials in our blood. PRP injections increase blood flow to the injured area and promote the healing process, therefore speeding up recovery. With soft tissue damage or injury platelets are the first cells to arrive in damaged area. When activated, they can release more than 300 substances that act in favor of tissue restoration, regeneration and healing including growth factors that stimulate stem cells. In addition, platelets recruit specialised cells and tissue smooth muscle cells to migrate towards the injured cells to promote healing. PRP has the potential to be a key player in the future of pain management. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), has been shown on numerous levels to decrease pain in patients suffering from musculoskeletal injury and/or osteoarthritis. This popular treatment is a form of Regenerative medicine for its ability to produce Cellular regeneration and healing of damaged tissue and consequently, reducing inflammation. With the ability to reduce inflammation, PRP has the potential to to have many benefiting functions within pain management and reduce the overall repetitive use of painkillers.
