Treatment Options for a Herniated Disc

This article follows on from the article previous – what are the signs of a herniated disc?

For lower back and neck herniated discs, conservative treatments can usually be applied for around 2-6 weeks to help reduce pain and promote functional mobility. Not one single treatment option works for every single patient, It is therefore important to find the correct treatment for the individual patient. also, patients may need a combination of different treatment options to promote full recovery. For example, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and manual therapy/osteopathy. In addition to helping with recovery, physical therapy is often used to educate patients on corrective posture and good body mechanics (such as proper lifting technique)

As mentioned in the previous article, conservative treatments that are adopted such as osteopathic treatment and rehabilitation therapy are in most cases successful in reducing pain and discomfort. Following on from successful treatment, it is important to teach the individual about preventative treatment and care. For those patients who experience severe pain and a high loss of function and don’t find relief from conservative treatments, steroid injections or forms of regenerative medicine may be adopted. Failing this, surgery may be considered as a last resort option.

A combination of the following conservative treatment options often often used through the first 1-6 weeks:

  • Spinal manipulation - osteopathic treatment

  • Physical therapy - exercise rehabilitation

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs - ibuprofen, naproxen

  • Steroid injections - epidural
