A good treatment option for post-traumatic osteoarthritis with Baker’s cyst.
The Journal of Regenerative Medicine 2020 published an case report Article on Leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the effectiveness of treatment for post-traumatic osteoarthritis with popliteal Baker’s cyst.
The athletes/patient presented with 2-months history of right knee pain, 17 months after undergoing right knee anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery. Examination revealed medial joint line and medial collateral ligament tenderness with posterior knee swelling. After aspiration, a corticosteroid injection was administered with temporary symptom relief. Diagnostic ultrasound examination confirmed the Baker's cyst. The patient then underwent two serial leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma injections into his right knee with a complete resolution of pain and cyst size. This identifying that leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment may be considered as a good treatment option for patients with Baker's cysts in the setting of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, with better long term outcomes.
PRP treatment is a very effective treatment used to stimulate repair and healing via the release of growth factors from platelets. The treatment is used via the use of a high platelet concentrate. further information can be found on our website below.
